In 2011 I entered an annual major beading competition run by one of the USA's largest beading companies. Designers from all over the world enter every year and the standards are really high- so what better way to test my mettle - and my nerve lol!

Custom Bridal Headband

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a good start to 2012. I am enjoying a busy start to January so no complaints from me :) I don't know how many of you were watching the Golden Globe awards but there seemed to be a very strong trend towards headbands in various shapes and sizes. Speaking of headbands...

I just want to show you this beautiful photo from one of my brides who so generously sent it on to me and allowed me to share it online. Mags wore a custom headband designed and made by yours truly for her special day and as you can see, she shows it off to perfection! I always love to see how my pieces are worn and really appreciate all the photos that have been sent on to me by my past customers.

Hi everyone,

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are all set for 2012- hopefully this year will bring many good things to us all!

NEW for 2012!

I have started work on some new one-of-a-kind bridal headpieces and just finished the first one which is pictured below- what do you think? It is a very femininely pretty hand-embroidered butterfly haircomb. I used a mix of glass silver seed beads, ivory glass pearls and sparkling clear crystals to embellish the butterfly. This will be for sale on my website later this month.

And, although it is the New Year- the winter is not over yet, so I will also be adding a small line of one-of-a-kind really pretty crochet hats and cosy neckwarmers to the website very soon as well.

Traditions & Transitions!

Who has ever wondered about the origins of traditional Christmas symbols? For example, where did the tradition to put a holly wreath on the front door come from? Why are red and green colours so associated with Christmas?

To the druids it was the holly being evergreen that made it special. They believed that the holly remained green all year round to help keep the earth beautiful during the autumn and winter when deciduous trees such as ash, oak and beech shed their leaves.

Some ancient religions used holly for protection. They hung it on doors and laid it on windowsills believing that in doing so, the holly would protect their homes from any evil spirits. Holly also has the combination of the green and red colours. Green is symbolic of life, and the red is symbolic of blood. Depending on which religion you are looking at, the red can symbolise the blood of Christ, and to the druids, the red of the holly berries was thought to have represented the menstrual blood of their sacred goddess.

So when you are hanging the holly wreath this Christmas, not only are you adding to that wonderful Christmas atmosphere, you are protecting your home from evil- I wonder if we all carried a holly leaf would it keep the government out of our pockets? J

Christmas means different things to different people. To me, it has always been a time to be with those I love, to snuggle up on the sofa with my daughter and watch movies, with just the lights of the Christmas tree and the warmth of the fire to see by. It is also a time of transition; the old year is almost gone, and a new one is on the horizon. Ever an optimist, I like to think that with the new year, new things will come- hopefully better.

Now that I have my my website up and running, I am gone back to designing and have quite a few new headpieces among other things in the works that I will be revealing early next year- more coming soon on that!

NEW Website!

Hi everyone! It's late I know, but I just had to write this quick blogpost to let you all know that my website is finally up and running! I have much to celebrate because not only is my website now live and looking fabulous thanks to my VERY patient designer, I got two sales from it within hours of it going live- can't ask for more than that :) Hopefully it is a sign of things to come.
And to those of you who have always supported me and believed in me- you know who you are, I don't have the fancy words, but thank you.

Sneak Peek!

Well, Winter is finally making an appearance, and I reckon it is here to stay for awhile. I was rudely awoken from a lovely sleep last night by the thunder of hailstones being walloped off the bedroom window by gale force winds... The winds have eased but the rain is still teeming down- oh well, it just gives me an excuse to light the fire and get the house all cosy!

My new website has been in development for quite awhile now but I am cautiously optimistic that it will be ready to go very soon! You will be able to order my pieces online, and there will also be some ready to wear jewellery/headpieces as well. I will be gradually adding more ready to wear pieces as I go along. AND, I will have a new product line for Autumn/Winter 2011! Some of you may know that I have been honing my crocheting skills and I will have a small line of one-of-a-kind crocheted scarves for sale on the website as well so I can't wait to get it up and running!

Hi everyone!

Apologies for the long delay in posting to my blog recently, life got messy and took over for awhile, but I think things are getting back on track. I went to my favourite city of Stockholm for a visit with one of my favourite people last week. I stayed for 6 days and enjoyed glorious sunshine and long bright evenings watching the sun set while hot air balloons drifted lazily over the horizon. It was so peaceful, and then the moonrises were spectacular too.

The highlight of my trip was a day out on the Stockholm archipelago- it is the most incredible place, and when I win the Lotto, that is where I will be buying my house by the sea- the light is so clear..

Beaded Art 'Dancing Butterfly' by Jen Doyle

Hi everyone, we are now just past the summer solstice with little sign of decent weather- but the summer is not over so there is hope yet that we might get some more beautiful days!

One of the things I love most about my job is the sheer versatility of the materials that I use. Beads and wire come in many shapes and forms and there is SO much that you can do with them. I love when someone comes to me and says ''can you make...'', It's always good to push outside the lines and do things that challenge your skills- you never know what you might discover in the process.

The piece in the photo was made for a birthday gift. It could be termed beaded art, or beaded wall art, the mission was to make something summery and beautiful in ocean colours that could be hung on a wall- and there it is- what do you think?

Bridal Hair Accessories: Headbands

If you are looking for something gorgeous but not too fussy to wear in your hair on your wedding day, perhaps a double headband (also known as a grecian style headband) might be something to think about. Not every woman's head is the same shape and size so all of my headbands are custom made to order. I use a softer wire than the standard rigid metal bands to make my headbands so it can be moulded to your headshape- and worn comfortably the whole day with NO headaches! The examples below are all made with a mix of pearls and crystals, and tiny glass seed beads and cost from €65. If you would like to order one of the ones you see below, or would like one made in specific colours, please email me jen@jendoyledesigns.com I'd be delighted to discuss your requirements.

From Ballyliffin to Laghey!

Hi everyone! I had a lovely few days off- in my daughter's words: ''it was the best week EVER!'' My days off coincided with my birthday and began with a surprise present of a pampering session at the fabulous Ballyliffin Lodge Spa Absolute bliss! Can't remember the last time I felt so relaxed!

Last week was a week for adventures, and we also took a trip to Glenveagh National Park and did approx 10km of rambling. The scenary is breathtaking, and reminded me a little of the fjords of Norway- and there is also an amazing variety of wildlife, from eagles to deer to the cuckoo- and we were lucky enough to hear the call of the cuckoo when we were there. What a place- well worth a visit!

I'm sure you'll remember that I had been asked to design and make a crown for the Festival Queen of Laghey, well I went along to the opening parade of the Laghey Blast Festival on Saturday the 30th April and met the lovely Gráinne, winner of the festival queen competition and got a great photo of her wearing the crown! She also made my daughter's day by obligingly posing for a photo with her :)

We finished off the day by going to the circus to see wonderful acts of acrobatics - my daughter loved it! I was very fascinated by the contortionist- does this woman have rubber bones? Perhaps not but watching her slide from one move to the next with very little effort made me wonder! :)

From Head to Hands

Hi everyone!
It's another beautiful day here in Donegal. It is a little hazy but the air is warm, the birds (and my daughter) are singing and the land around me is alive with new growth and vibrant colours..
It isn't often I get a chance to do something completely different in my work but recently I was delighted and honoured to be asked to make the crown for the Laghey Festival Queen 2011. The organisers gave me free rein with design so after a day or two spent pondering it all, I sat down and began to make it. I rarely sketch out what I make- unless asked to by a customer. I tend to work straight from head to hands, but anyway, this is what I came up with:

I decided to take Spring as my theme and went from there. The crown is made using a mix of wirework and beadwork. There is a trinity knot, which I used to symbolise past, present and future, and I embellished this with fabulously sparkly Swarovski crystals. Then I made beaded flowers in shimmering ivory edged with silver and centred with an emerald crystal, and I also wove beaded leaves through the knot and added them to the flowers to make the crown shape.

Hi everyone!

Inspiration from the Ancient Celts

Ireland is a small island with a relatively small population if you take the world as a whole, but we have thousands of years of history which left behind a vast treasury of gems from the past. I am particularly fascinated with the ancient Celts. They had a very close relationship with nature, followed the seasons, and found meaning in everything from a trinity knot to a grove of ash trees. They were also amazing craftspeople and made incredible jewellery (among other things!)- their workmanship and attention to detail never fails to awe me everytime I see it. It is from the ancient Celts that I draw inspiration for my latest experiment with different techniques. A torc was a piece of jewellery originally worn only by men but over time were also worn by women too.

It is said that men wore them traditionally as part of battle dress- not just as decoration but also to stop a bladefrom severing their head from it's rightful place! How true that is I am not 100% certain but what is known is that torcs were an indication of wealth and rank. Those with wealth tended to wear silver and gold, and those without wore torcs made with iron.

My interpretation of a torc is lighter and made with silver wire and dyed apple green jasper. On the right side of it I shaped the wire into a trinity knot, and the left are 2 simple spirals. The trinity knot has a few different meanings- depending on who you talk to or what you read, but from what I gather it can mean anything from ''past, present, future'' to ''mind, body, spirit'', and the spirals represent expansion of energy and consciousness..

Hi everyone, can you believe it's April already?! Where does the time go... April showers are certainly making a very definite appearance up here in Donegal today, in fact it hasn't stopped raining all morning, but hopefully the sun will break through soon..

Spring Cleaning

Hi all,

I have been very quiet on the internet this week as I got bitten by the spring cleaning bug and as a result I attacked my studio! So, after a week of evicting spiders, decluttering, reorganising, painting and cleaning, I now have my studio back. And as always, whenever I do a clear out, I can't find anything, but my space is now light, bright and airy and I can move without fear of knocking over towers of paperwork, books or stacks of bead containers so I am one happy woman today :)
I am posting a photo- it isn't brilliant as the light coming in the window was very strong but you'll get an idea of what it looks like at least. As you can see the table is still in a bit of a heap but at least the room itself is done and sorted! I will hopefully be posting photos of some new designs next week as well so pop back if you get a chance.

This second design is a one-of-a-kind hairvine- easily pinned into the hair with normal hairclips (bobby pins). The blossoms are made with mother of pearl petals, and a sparkling firepolished Czech crystal for the heart of each flower. I also added some rose quartz sprays among the blossoms. Rose quartz is known as the 'love stone' and is said to enhance love within marriage and encourage self worth in the individual.

Hi everyone!
What an absolutely gorgeous day we had today. Balmy breezes, warm sunshine and blue, blue skies- I could really feel the summer! Hardly surprising, I barely got a scrap of work done today- how could I resist the lure of such a day after the long winter we had?!

So, I am now selling on Etsy- one of the biggest online marketplaces. I only joined a few weeks ago so I am still figuring it all out. I love all things handmade, and have already found the most amazing bits and pieces on there! I have started populating my store with newly designed ready to wear hair accessories and jewellery, and I also have a bridal section as well, and all of the pieces in that section are made to order. I will be gradually adding more pieces, and will be transferring some of the pieces from the online shop here on my blog over to my Etsy store so keep an eye on it- you might see something you like! Can you believe it's March tomorrow? How time flies these days... Elections, Oscars... my daughter's birthday and St. Patrick's Day. He banished every last snake from Irish soil (in theory!) and left a legacy unprecedented by any other saint known to man! Every year, all over the world, on the 17th of March, from Dublin to Tokyo and everywhere in between, the Irish (and non Irish) celebrate everything Irish!

Inspired by the many shades of green in the Irish landscape, I have made this pretty set of green beaded flower hairclips. Wear them altogether or match each one to a different outfit!

Atlantic Inspiration

As a designer I am always asked ''where do you get your inspiration from?''. The answer is that I when I am designing specifically for a certain person, I get a lot of my inspiration from that person themselves, because I like my pieces to reflect something of the person I am designing for.
But I am also hugely inspired by nature, all the colours and shapes and textures never fail to grab my attention, and I have to admit that I love the ocean and the sky in particular. The many moods, the constantly shifting colours of waters that never rest, the inexhaustable palette of colours in an evening sky. In fact 3 of my favourite colours are blue, green and white.

Spring is coming! By Jen Doyle

Spring is coming. Despite the gale force winds and heavy rain- and not to mention the recent snow, Spring is coming. There is a certain feel to the air, and you can see it tiptoe across the fields in small but dazzling patches of the that vibrant green which for me, has always heralded the coming of Spring. The above photo was taken today... I get an enormous amount of inspiration from nature, and some of my recent designs were inspired by a favourite of mine- the Primrose flower. This simple but sturdy little flower comes in a huge varieties of colours, comes back year after year, and I have seen them in the most unlikely of places.

Spring represents all kinds of growth, out in nature and also new beginnings in our personal and business lives. It is one of my favourite seasons of the year. The new year will bring all kinds of challenges for everyone, but I think the best kind of challenges are those we set ourselves to do. Two challenges I set myself this year were to:

Play with the whole idea of making videos. This is totally new to me but proving to be a very interesting challenge. I learn more about it each time I make one! I now have a YouTube Channel- called Jen Doyle Designs (what else LOL!) and you can have a look at my videos HERE Please feel free to leave a comment on any of the videos.
And the second thing is- although some of you may have guessed by now with the amount of ''Please vote for me!'' that I am doing lately :-) Anyway, I have entered my work in a few different beadwork competitions...just to see how I get on. You never know! So at the end of this post there'll be a couple of different links you can click on if you would like to vote for me- no sign up involved in any of them!

And now that Valentines Day is almost here, the shops are festooned with hearts, flowers, boxes of chocolates, gift sets...cards..cakes etc in every shade of pink and red known to man.. For me, I like the simple things..the card that you know your significant other has spent time picking out, and I have to admit to being very partial to a bunch of roses or tulips.. But I think in the end, no matter who buys what for each other, the romance comes from within.

Back Home Again!

Hi Everyone!

Well as you can see, I am back home in Ireland again. I had a wonderful weekend in Stockholm and as always there was never enough time to do everything I wanted to do! But I did manage to attend Sweden's best known wedding fair at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm City with my friend Marie. The hotel itself is amazing and was a perfect setting for the romance of a wedding fair. The photo you see of the hotel is one that I found on Google, just to give you an idea of the interior of the hotel. Built over 14 islands, Stockholm is a very beautiful city and I just wish I'd had more time to explore and take photos.. But- that just gives me an excuse to go back! I used to live in Stockholm, and no matter how often I go back there, it just never loses it's appeal for me.

We used Marie's mobile phone to film the bridal fashion show at the wedding fair and although it's a little fuzzy here and there (only so much you can do with a phone!), Marie worked her technical magic and did a great job of splicing and dicing the video clips to produce the above video. There were several different designers/bridal boutiques present and the ones that stood out the most for me were Lilly and the Zetterberg Collection . Both of these collections were a little bit different and I liked a lot of both. The fabulous work of Blomster Paletten (florist) was used for the bridal flowers- these were amazing sculptured floral pieces that were very different from the usual bouquet of flowers and as soon as I can get some photos I will post them here for you to have a look at- I loved them!

The weekend ended far too quickly, but I managed to get in some last minute shopping aroung the cobbled streets of Stockholm's Gamla Stan (Old Town), and we also bought some delicious cinnamon rolls and lemon cakes to go with some coffee and one last marathon chat before I left Stockholm on the 31st Jan.

Hi everyone!
This past week has been a very eventful and exciting one for me. I launched my online store, got nominated for a W'Oscar, AND- this Friday I will travel to one of my favourite places: Stockholm! I will spend the weekend with one of my favourite people, and we will be going to check out all the bridal fashion trends at one of Sweden's largest wedding fairs so I have much to look forward to!

Calla Lily Hairvine

This pretty little hairvine is made with ivory pearl calla lilies- each with a sparkling crystal in the centre, and then the vine itself is also dotted with crystals as well. Simple but elegant, this vine measures a little over 7 inches long and is quite flexible making it perfect for a variety of hairstyles.

This vine can be made in different lengths and is also available in a soft white colour. It's shown here in ivory.

So here we are, in January 2011- already! But hopefully the year ahead will be fruitful and interesting for us all. Fashion Show in Stockholm Sweden!

The autumn has come and almost gone and as we head into the winter season I have some very exciting news to share. On Saturday the 13th November some of my headpieces will be featured in a fashion show in Stockholm, Sweden!

The event is being organised by Jessica Johannson of Your Closet -a vintage clothing company, in collaboration with Skrattarå , a comedy club who is hosting the event, and Basar Under who run a weekly market.

But why Sweden I hear you ask? Well just to briefly explain, before settling back in Ireland, I spent quite a few years travelling, and my travels led me to spending what amounts to several years in Scandinavia, Sweden in particular so when Jessica contacted me to ask me if I were interested in being a part of the fashion show I was delighted to say yes!
Jessica’s business was born out of a love of all things vintage and unique and besides sourcing out vintage clothing she also offers a personal shopping/styling service and has recently added colour analysis to her service as well.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to share my latest project with you all as it is quite different to what I would normally do. I was recently commissioned to design and make a headpiece with matching necklace for a bride to be who will be wearing a fabulous renaissance style wedding dress in a deep shade of blue.

She wanted it based on some of the flowers in her bouquet (black calla lily, orchids) and then for the pieces to also tie in with her dress as well.

The headband has been wrapped in a rich brown ribbon so that it will 'disappear' into her hair, which will be worn down on the big day. It isn't often I get a chance to work with such vibrant colours and I totally enjoyed the challenge of it!

Most Popular Hairpins

This beaded flower shape hairpin is one of my most requested items. The photos shown here are of bridal colours-silver and ivory/white. But I have done these to match bridesmaids dresses in all kinds of colours as well. If you click on the photo gallery links to the right of this page you can see more colours and shapes available.

Grecian Style Headbands

These headbands have proved to be a pretty popular item. I make the headbands from scratch using a softer wire that is very comfortable to wear the whole day and won't leave you with an awful headache as the more solid metal bands can do. I can do these in any colour at all so please feel free to enquire. Examples below are of a gold headband with ivory pearls and clear crystals, and the same again but with a silver headband.

Evening all! I am just posting some photos of my latest commission- a first for me as I have never made a birdcage veil/accessory before. It is always fun to try something different and both my client and I were very happy with the end results! As you can see from the photos I used a blue netting (to match a 1950's vintage style dress in blue and white), and I embellished the veil with blue and white beaded flower petals, and also blue and white glass pearls. I finished it off by edging the ends with tiny blue beads and a little blue/white pearl flower on each side. The veil has a small comb attached so it can be easily used in tandem with a matching haircomb- (see my facebook page for more photos with matching comb). Dreamcatchers

Well, here it is, my mystery project! Completely out of the sphere of what I normally do- I have been dying to try to make one of these for a long time so here it is- my first Dreamcatcher. I am fascinated with ancient lore and legends, from our own Irish history as well as other cultures. Native American Indian legend says that if you put one of these above your bed, all the good dreams will filter through the hole in the centre of the dreamcatcher net, while all the bad dreams will be caught in the net- unable to get free. Then when the dawn light touches the dreamcatcher, the bad dreams caught in its net will perish.. I like this theory quite a lot!

I made this one wrapped in white, with a mix of blue, black and white feathers. I also used rock crystal quartz to embellish it. This stone is said to be useful for many things and in particular, healing, creativity, communication and clarity of thought..

Summer News

Hi everyone!

Summer seems to have finally arrived -bringing with it hot sunshine and balmy breezes- how long it will last is anyone's guess but I know I am enjoying it whenever I get the chance. My garden- such as it is right now is blooming and the bright colours are as always an inspiration for my work.

Work is continuing with the development of my new website so please bear with me- I will post the launch date once I am certain of what's happening.

I also have done some recent commisions for some wedding guests. These new designs are simple in design, and elegantly pretty, and are also very lightweight to wear- and the good news is that they are very affordable, prices beginning at only €25!

Getting 'Ahead' :-)

Just recently I had the opportunity to borrow a hairdressing head and play with it for a few hours. Now I can confirm what I have always known- a hairdresser I am MOST definitely not lol! But I did have fun trying and it was nice to see what some of my pieces looked like. I focused on some of the hairvines as I get a lot of questions about how these are actually worn. to be honest, I think hairvines are extremely versatile as a hair accessory. They are flexible and therefore very manouverable, and will suit a wide variety of hairstyles. They can be made in any size and the 3 I have shown in my photo gallery are 2 long ones that will go right over the head like a hairband and the other one- the golden roses hairvine, is shown pinned into an upstyle.

What makes it all worth it.

Good morning everyone, and what an absolutely glorious morning it is here in Donegal! Achingly blue skies seem even more blue against the odd clouds that drift over and it is hot out there.

Being a jewellery/accessories designer who works from home is not always as glamorous as it sounds. Also as a sole trader who has to wear all the various hats that go with that title, added to all the other hats I have to wear as a mother, wife etc, can make for an often chaotic life when I barely know which way is up!

But sometimes things happen that make all the chaos of working from home- worth it. This morning I got a text message from one of my clients who is getting married today. She said ''Hi Jennifer, I'm wearing the hairvine you made for me. It's so beautiful. Thanks so much-will send on photo in a few weeks.''
That she went to the bother of contacting me on her wedding day- to tell me that, has given me such a boost! When things like that happen, I remember all the reasons I have for following a dream and seeing it through. Makes all the ups and downs of working from home- worth it.

These are my latest creations, completely inspired by the wild Atlantic ocean off the Donegal coastline. The barrette in the top photo is made with glass pearls in teal and white, while the pendent is made with a pure white beach pebble. I wrapped it with a gold coloured wire and the spirals represent the tossing waves of the ocean. I love beach pebbles! There is a timeless quality to their smooth surface, and something about them always speaks to me of the summer.

Hi everyone! This is the latest addition to the Hidden Fires Collection. It is a hairvine measuring approximately 12 inches long, made with mother of pearl leaves, glass pearls, glass copper seed beads and 4 handmade beaded flowers. Hairvines are a very versitile hair accessory as they can be worn in several different ways eg. on the crown of your head like a tiara, as a bunwrap, or wound through a half up-half down hairstyle.

The bracelet cuff you see here was inspired by and made for a very good friend of mine. She has suffered with something called social phobia for a very long time and has recently begun to highlight this condition and how it can affect a persons life. She is a quiet woman, but she is full of life and warmth and creativity and has much to give.

The fiery red freshwater pearls signify all that fire and determination and courage, and the copper leaves are meant to represent growth and creativity.

I like the way the two colours compliment each other and I am really pleased with the flow of the whole thing!

This picture shows a complete set of jewellery (earrings, necklace & bracelet) and matching haircomb that I have just finished making for a bridesmaid. Made in gorgeous shades of purple and lavender pearls with clear Swarovski crystal, this set was another challenge for me as I have never made jewellery in this particular style before, but I thoroughly enjoyed the whole ceative process! All the clasps and the comb itself are also completely handmade.

Daisies. The ancient Celts used them and other wildflowers to make pretty garlands of flowers to wear in their hair on their wedding day. Did you know that they follow the path of the sun during the day and close their petals at night and on gloomy days? Their delicate beauty belies the strength of a bear and tenacity for life. They stubbornly hold onto their petals long after most other flowers have lost their bloom. It is no wonder I was so inspired to use them as inspiration for an upcoming line of hair accessories!

Another First!

Another first! The last couple of days have been full of 'firsts' for me! I took part in my first wedding fair on Sunday 1st of March, and this evening I took part in a local ''Pamper yourself'' event for women. It was my first time to be part of any events like that so it has been a very good experience for me. As I have said before, doing things like the wedding fair, and local craft fairs etc, its just such a great way to get out there and let people know of your existance, and these kind of events are also very good for getting feedback on your work- which is always needed- good, bad or indifferent.
The photo above is of a recently completed haircomb. It is made with Swarowski crystals, glass pearls and silver lined glass seed beads woven with silver wire. The comb itself I made with a brown wire which works very well in darker coloured hair.

An Interesting Day

I exhibited at my first official wedding fair yesterday and once the nerves had settled I have to say I really enjoyed it. I made one good sale and had lots of very positive interest and comments on my work so I feel it was money well spent. Doing the fair was a great way to talk to people and find out what they are looking for, and get feedback on what I offer.

On speaking with other exhibitors I found out that bookings are very rarely made on the day of a fair itself, that it is usually within the weeks or even months following the fair when you start to get the feedback/enquiries etc. That made perfect sense to me because when I got married last year and did the rounds of the wedding fairs, I spent a good while just gathering all the information first and then went about contacting suppliers. But fingers crossed I will hear back from a few at least :-)

I have included a few photos of my display at the fair (or is that fayre?). In all the rush to make sure I had everything I needed- I forgot the camera- how typical is that?! I had to use my phone to take the photos so the quality isn't brilliant but good enough to give an idea of what it all looked like.
